FAWENA Handover Donation for Flood Victim School Children in Ohangwena Region

24 February 2023

The Ohangwena region, in the northern part of Namibia has experienced persistent flooding reportedly coming from Angola, as the South of Angola continues to receive heavy rainfall. As a result, the Ohangwena Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture closed down the affected schools, and communities have been forced to relocate to higher ground and housed in camps. This posed a significant emergency risk to community members and school children’s lives and health. Teaching and learning has been affected as classes had to be put on hold until the water levels subsided. The food distribution and sanitation situation in the households remained a challenge as it became difficult for the communities to close the flood water and buy their necessities. Against this background, FAWENA with support from African Deli, a Walvis Bay based factory, donated ready-made food packages to the value of N$383,000. The packages consisted of 6,000 packs of matangaras, 6,000 packs of chicken gizzards and 4,800 packs of speckled sugar beans. The food packages were donated to 32 schools to benefit about 4,453 schoolchildren affected by the flood. A handover ceremony took place at Helao Nafidi Town in Oshikango. The ceremony was attended by representatives from FAWENA ,African Deli as well as Ohangwena Regional authorities, Teachers, Principals and members of the media.

FAWENA provides scholarships, mentoring, empowerment programs and toiletries to girls throughout Namibia.
